Mats ChristeenFounder, Foundrywood; Model
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Mats Christeen developed a strong admiration for carpentry as a young man helping his father build their house.
In 2006, after playing professional hockey in Sweden, Christeen came to New York City. He has worked as a model for top brand campaigns, including as Tommy Hilfiger, Françoise Girbaud, American Eagle, Miguel Adrover, Frankie Morello and Versace. He has also appeared in catalogs for Target, Macys and Champion.
Today, Christeen manages his own carpentry workshop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he creates tables, chairs, room dividers and other pieces using reclaimed wood, metal and various materials.
“When I lived in Sweden, playing hockey, I used to go to vintage stores, find old treasures, and upholster or resurface them. My dad is definitely one of the reasons I got into carpentry; he built the house I grew up in with his own hands and I was by his side.”
Christeen’s first project was an order of 21 desks for a real estate office in Long Island City. Soon, he designed furniture for a Douglas Elliman office in New York City. “Every piece I make is unique. That’s why I love doing what I do--it’s a new challenge every time.”www.foundrywood.tumblr.com
