M.P. Moskowitz
Founder, The Bureau of Trade
Michael Phillips Moskowitz has come a long way since he served as a Middle East foreign policy research analyst at think tanks in the United States and overseas. Since then, he co-founded the award-winning menswear label, Gytha Mander, and TODO Monthly magazine, and worked at IDEO, a design and innovation firm in Palo Alto.
His newest venture is the Bureau of Trade—a luxury shopping portal/style guide/media prism/ cultural marketplace. Moskowitz imbues the site with what he calls “transactional entertainment.”
“I wanted to make a banal, empty errand like 'shopping' into a meaningful, resonant, didactic experience,” he says. “This company champions authenticity, intelligence, interaction, and craft, and transforms materialism from a purposeless addiction into a mindful, meaningful approach to personal expression.”
He was driven to start the site out of his frustration with current offerings aimed at the male audience. “I was fed up with major men's lifestyle publications and commerce sites that feature the same people, relentlessly push the same products, focus on the same prices and are available everywhere,” he explains.
With The Bureau of Trade, he strives to educate, entertain and inspire visitors as they shop for distinctive merchandise like vintage timepieces, clothing, classic cars, furniture and literature.
