Dixon first started her publishing career at Architectural Digest where she was an editor in the art and antiques department, then the architecture editor, and went on to become the managing editor. For Hachette, she launched ELLE Décor as the founding editor-in-chief. She was then lured to Canada where she redesigned and repositioned one of their magazines, Style at Home, making it reflective of the next century and a must read for consumers and advertisers alike.
While in Canada, Barbara appeared on numerous lifestyle and home décor shows and eventually produced shows for HGTV and CanWest Global. The McGraw-Hill Companies enlisted Barbara’s talents when they decided to enter the home décor consumer marketplace with MyHouse magazine and web site. Here she collaborated with them on their business plan, creative appearance and editorial tone as well as the day-to-day running of the brand before returning to the luxury lifestyle market when she took over Cottages and Gardens Publications (Hamptons C&G, Palm Beach C&G, Connecticut C&G, Westchester C&G) as their editorial director.
Today, in addition to continuing to consult and produce for numerous magazines, web sites, books and TV, Barbara also consults with designers and manufacturers on their branding as well as homeowners when they are looking for the appropriate interior designer, architect or landscape designer.
