John Rawlins began his professional career at Tucci, Segrete & Rosen, helping to shape the architectural identities of retail giants such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Printemps
of Paris. In 2001, he was recruited by Bergdorf Goodman to be the Creative Director of a $100 million dollar renovation of the historic Fifth Avenue flagship mansion. Over the next four years, John helped lead the reinvention of Bergdorf’s, previously called the "dowdy grey lady” of retail, toward the exuberant fashion emporium it is today. In January 2004, Bergdorf Goodman CEO Ron Frasch signed on to lead Saks Fifth Avenue and asked John to join his team as Creative Director of Store Design. John quickly shifted gears and began to re-shape the physical identity of Saks Fifth Avenue. Within a year, a slick and sophisticated prototype for the company was created and is presently being introduced throughout the company’s 56 global locations. While at Saks, John collaborated with world renowned architect Frank Gehry in reimaging the NYC flagship store and was part of a thinktank led by Gehry and branding guru, Bruce Mau, focusing on heightening the Saks customer experience.

In February 2006, John was invited back to Bergdorf Goodman to design and oversee the renovation of the classic, main floor of the women’s store as well as developing a modernist design concept for the Men’s designer floor, to be realized in 2012. John resigned from Bergdorf Goodman in November 2008 to creatively join forces with his brother Christopher Rawlins at his architectural firm Rawlins Design Inc. Together they recently redesigned and expanded the shoe department for Bergdorf Goodman and a VIP personal shopping complex.

They have also created several retail boutiques and are now working on assorted public areas of the Fontainebleau resort in Miami. For luxury handbag designer Nancy Gonzalez, they created her first stand-alone shop in Seoul Korea in 2009 and recently opened a 2nd boutique in Seoul as well. They are currently creating additional shops for Nancy Gonzalez within Harrods department store in London, Harvey Nichols department store in Dubai and within Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills Ca. John has also recently completed CO-OP restaurant, bar and lounge at the Rivington Hotel in NYC and a pair of hair salons for “hair-stylist to the stars”, Ric Pipino. Aside from extensive retail and hospitality design experience, John is working on several highend residential projects and has served as a Production Designer for an independent film as well as an Art Director and Set Stylist for fashion editorials. His work has been featured in Interior Design Magazine, Surface Magazine, Wallpaper, New York Spaces, VMSD, DDI, paper, and Vibe Magazine.

A sense of finesse, the delightful surprise of common materials taken to uncommon heights, the sensitivity to light and nuances of color associated with refined painting. These are the qualities that pervade a Walz interior–be it a commercial setting or residence-created honestly and directly to enhance the quality of life of its occupants.

The reference to the fine arts is not an arbitrary association, but one grounded in fact. Until 1978 Kevin Walz was a painter, having studied fine arts at Pratt Institute and painting at the New York Studio School under Philip Gustion and Esteban Vicente. He turned to interiors (Walz Design, New York) when unsolicited commisions came from clients intrigued by the design of his own living/working loft located in the then-unfashionable section of Chelsea. Yet he cites painting and sculpture as his continual and primary sources of influence along with "non-architectural structures, industrial and agricultural forms."

Mr. Walz’s biography lists a selective array of finely detailed interior installations, architectural projects and signature collections of products, numerous awards and acclaim by the design press worldwide. Mr. Walz is the recipient of the American Academy’s prestigious Rome Prize fellowship and is in the Interior Design Hall of Fame. His designs have been exhibited in numerous museums and his art has been exhibited in galleries in Europe and the U.S. Kevin Walz designed the first and legendary collection of furniture made of 100% cork for KorQinc. Mr. Walz is a single father of two daughters. He has a studio in Rome, where he has lived for 17 years, and an office in New York.
