TREND SPOTTING: IT’S ELEMENTAL

BRASS IS BACK
“I can hardly bear to pass a brass accessory without buying and putting in my store! The richness of brass looks so great with many different colors and styles. It also adds an element of metal to a room, and you really need many different textures to create a space that is layered and has depth. And most important, these brass creatures can add a wonderful touch a whimsy to a room, making the room appear to wink!” — Hillary Thomas, Hillary Thomas Designs

"It’s all about furniture that reflects personality. Right now, for me, these are boarding school cupboards—a bit tattered, a lot of character and plenty useful. It’s about taking something vintage, adding a bit of paint to the wood and making something completely your own."
— Timothy Oulton

“I’m a girl who loves bold pattern but sometimes you only want a small dose. I’m noticing a trend in furniture pieces with back panels covered in wallpaper. This is a perfect way to integrate a little pattern and personality into your room.”

DISPLAY YOUR COLLECTIONS

“One of the biggest hits in our Hampton Showhouse family lounge was a collection of vintage National Geographic magazines stacked horizontally and vertically on the lower shelf of a console table. The collection added the pop of color that we wanted in the room at a great price: we paid under $100 for 200 copies! Any collection of magazines, artwork, objects, whether collected over time, taken from your grandparents’ attic or even purchased online, becomes a unique personal statement in your home. Collections are entirely personal and have also recently been discussed in the
press by such big-hitters as Mario Buatta and John Rosselli.”

DECORATING FOR ENTERTAINMENT

Bring a Room to Life “Colors! Colors! Colors!! Pink, Kelly green, peacock blue and eggplant paired with that great neutral, greige! To me, color is what sets the tone in a room and a house for tranquility, joy and happiness. And you see this trend over and over again. Of course there are amazing neutral tone homes out there, but I’m really starting to see even those projects come alive with pops of color.”

“Furniture pieces painted in a bold lively hue can add a punch of color to enhance your design scheme.”
— Tobi Fairley, Tobi Fairley Interior Design

“In the Hamptons Showhouse we designed the lower lever family lounge with a lot of seating options: groups of banquettes, slipper chairs on swivels, garden stools, small ottomans on casters. Loads of seating options allow for intimate conversations within the space. A furniture plan that is conducive to conversation and mingling is key to party flow, especially during the upcoming holiday season.”
— Suysel dePedro Cunningham & Anne Maxell Foster, Tilton Fenwick

“Blame it on Mad Men or Bunny Williams, but vintage barware is the new staple of a bar display. (And by the way, bars in multiple rooms in a house are GREAT!) These days, a design project isn’t complete without finding the perfect and unique vintage barware to top off a room. And barware doesn’t have to be just for alcohol. I love using these pieces to make having a glass of lemonade feel like a celebration!”
