When steam-powered machines of 19th century Britain collide with imagination, the result is the fantastical and innovative world of Steampunk, a genre that has transformed into a whole subculture of its own, including fashion, decor, music, and film. If you aren’t familiar with the movement, allow me to introduce you to Art Donovan, Southampton artist, curator, and Steampunk lighting master. Donovan creates Steampunk-inspired light fixtures, as well as other creative works such as clocks, mandalas, and other contraptions that take on Steampunk characteristics. As the curator of the groundbreaking Steampunk exhibit at the Museum of the History of Science at Oxford University, Donovan is an authority on all that is Steampunk. Visit Donovan’s website Donovan Design and Donovan’s blog to view his artworks and learn his take on the Steampunk movement. Donovan also has a storefront for his studio, Donovan Design, on VandM.com. Donovan’s new book, The Art of Steampunk: Extraordinary Devices and Ingenious Contraptions from the Leading Artists of the Steampunk Movement, celebrates the work of 17 different artists and the extreme diversity that Steampunk encompasses.
Enjoy a meet and greet with Art Donovan on Saturday August 6th at 6 PM at Canio’s in Sag Harbor, New York, and Saturday August 13th at 6 PM during “Author’s Night” at the East Hampton Library. Get your book signed and take a tour of a full exhibition of Steampunk devices and sculptures on Saturday August 20th from 5 to 8 PM at Gallery 429 in Greenport, New York.
