ALL AGLOW: Cozy On Up For Those Cold Wintry Nights

by Tamara Moscowitz

The subject of lighting is never dull.  It transforms a space by its sheer presence and nearly always provides the right light in the right space whether sitting solo in a room or complementing existing lights. Table lamps have special appeal as they enhance a décor style whether fun, functional, or decorative.  Now that we are in the throes of bitter cold weather surrounded by snow with more to come, what better way to feel warm and cozy than having atmospheric table lamps in rooms designated for leisurely pursuits. The table lamps featured offer sculptural simplicity combined with discreet lighting that beckons one to come in and “cozy on up.” Of the three lamps recently launched and shown here, two are by designers born in Brittany who were influenced by seafaring objects and lighthouse structures: the much sought after brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and a newcomer on the European design scene Ionna Vautrin.  Who knew Brittany to be so inspirational and rich in design talent?

Binic, 2010
Ionna Vautrin for Foscarini

$276

Steering slightly off soft lighting, but a must-have is this versatile, multi-purpose lamp that goes beyond a glow to shine in on a defined space. Ideal for a study, bedroom, bookshelf, low tables and is especially suitable as a reading lamp. It is designed as a takeaway object, a gift, and its decorative packaging (not shown) is in the same color and shape as the lamp. Materials: satin aluminum for the base; projector in a shiny polycarbonate. Vautrin was intrigued with deck-top air vents, and then named the “Binic” after a lighthouse on the Breton coast. http://www.ylighting.com, (866) 428-9289.
