STEAMPUNK: The New Section at The Pier Antiques Show

Steampunk. Definition: a genre of science fiction set in Victorian times when steam was the main source of machine power

If you thought that steampunk was just a fad, think again. At the VandM.com sponsored Pier Antiques Show in New York City, Nov 13-14, 2010, steampunk came out in a big way with the antique world’s first ever dedicated steampunk exhibit, titled Steampunk House.

Twelve of the world’s steampunk heavy hitters exhibited at the Pier Antiques Show, including VandM.com dealer Early Electrics showcasing a amazing selection of handmade lighting, Steampuffin and their fully-functional steampunk computers, Todd Cahill and his steam machine sculptures, and more from Jaak Demarest and Dale Mathis.

Even though the steampunk genre was first seen in the 1980′s, it just seems to be hitting the mainstream within the last couple years. And judging from the enthusiasm of the crowd and the coverage of this event by the press, I believe that it is safe to say that the first ever Steampunk House was a resounding success.

Filament lighting is its own trend, but Early Electrics uses these in his handmade lighting creations that would be perfectly suited for a Tim Burton film.

The selection was just amazing. Most of the time people only have the opportunity to view steampunk online at sites such as boingboing, but seeing these pieces in person was a whole different experience. These photos, even though some show great detail, do a disservice to the level of craftmanship that these moving pieces of art consist of. If The Pier Antiques Show does a similar exhibit at their next show in March, you’ll definitely need to go. We’ll keep you updated.
