PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH: Sculptural Installations From Icelandic Artist Katrin Sigurdardottir

by Tamara Moscowitz

Any museumgoer who has been tempted to jump over a rope to take comfort in a beautifully decorated period room will be intrigued when viewing “Katrin Sigurdardottir at the Met” an unusual installation of two new sculptural designs of interiors created specifically for the Metropolitan Museum by the artist. Sigurdardottir’s aim is to address the complexities of viewing a period room as an object. That is, for observation only.

Entitled “Boiseries” these installations are full-scale interpretations of 18th-century French rooms preserved at the Metropolitan’s Wrightsman Galleries; one from the Hôtel de Crillon (1777-80) on the Place de la Concorde, Paris, and the other from the Hôtel de Cabris (ca. 1774) at Grasse in Provence. Sigurdardottir is known for her detailed renditions of places, both real and fictional that incorporate an element of surprise. Through March 6, 2011. http://www.metmuseum.org/
