BRASILIA GROWS UP: Photo Exhibition Capture A City In The Making

by Tamara Moscowitz

Closing all too soon on November 27 at 1500 Gallery in Chelsea (named for the year Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese) is a small, informative exhibition “Brasilia,” a group of striking impressionist vintage photographs celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the inauguration of Brazil’s capital city.

The exhibition is curated by Brazilian photographer Murillo Meirelles who selected eight iconic images from thousands in a forgotten archive of negatives taken by photojournalists from 1958-1960 during the city’s construction phase. These stunning, large images represent a city being planned from its non-organic state in the center of Brazil into one with contemporary architecture, art, and symbolic statues. Collectors of vintage photography can see how simple, modern techniques – scanning the negatives, photo shop, and Digital-C prints resulted in an other-worldliness that lend an authenticity to a moment in time when the visionary idealism of its team of urban planners, architects, and landscape architects were realized.
