AUSTERE LUXURY

by Bill Indursky

Last year, the big trend in both fashion and home decor was a redeux of the late 1980s.  Since trends last for an average of 1-5 years in the home decor industry look for the 1980s to continue.  But in 2011, keep an eye out for the early 1990s (circa 1992) to make a comeback.

Once, super models ruled the land eclipsing even the brightest celebrity. Calvin Klein was the style maker with his clean line luxury American sportswear. Decor is taking its cue from this era. Not as much about minimalism, this 90s manifestation is about clean traditional lines, luxe details, tone-on-tone, and texture-on-texture.

Here are the important bullet points for this trend:

  • Clean traditional lines
  • Luxe details
  • Tone-on-tone
  • Texture-on-texture
  • Cocooning comfort

Most important colors for this trend:

  • Camel
  • Grey

Here are several example that best exemplify the trend:

Art will still be a major focus for rooms.  Unique and original art will be installed in a very site specific way.  Color palette of tone-on-tone color in somber tones.  Notice the touches of Asian and Deco that are sneaking in.  The room looks rich but not gaudy.  It does not give away how expensive it really is.  The room is classic but clean lined and luxe.

This would be the room shown above equal in which is part of the trend in fashion.  Notice the fabric has a subtle shine.  The textural mix of wool and other fabrics and a touch of leather/suede that will also be seen in home decor.

The different flavors of CAMEL with the rich mix of textures in fashion coming this fall perfect matches what is happening in home decor.

Texture-on-texture.

Tone-on-tone and texture-on-texture.

All the colors of the luxe camel palette.  The interplay of cool and warm version of colors.  The classic patterns that are equally balanced between negative and positive space which read as visual texture rather than pattern.

The same is reflected in fashion.

Fabrics will have a raw, faded, rich tone-on-tone, texture-on-texture look.  Fabrics will look like they have some age or history to them.

More fabrics on trend.  These tie into two of the other big trends Deco / WPA inspiration and Suiting Fabrics.
