GWATHMEY SIEGEL AND ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTS: Reinventing The Modern Tradition

by Tamara Moscowitz

The publication of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects: Selected Works, a new monograph from Images Publishing, is a celebration of the firm’s forty-year legacy as a pioneer practice in the reinvention of the modern tradition.

Founded in 1968 by Robert Siegel and the late Charles Gwathmey, Robert Siegel’s dedication in the preface reaffirms their core principles to “embrace volume, intersection, density and the enduring characteristics of carefully chosen materials,” is followed by 25 exemplary projects with drawings, insightful text, and beautiful photographs.

Widely known for designing residencies of a high-profile cliente, GSAA’s diverse base ranges from academic institutions, libraries, hotels, and museums. Selected Works is available from amazon.com.

GSAA’s design did not disturb the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic building. The aerial view from CPW shows how the Guggenheim’s addition blends in with both the scale and design of the surrounding structures.

The Astor Place condominiums located on the intersection of Lafayette Street, Astor Place and Fourth Avenue curvilinear shape provides a strong contrast to the neighborhood’s rectilinear masonry buildings.
