BEHIND THE SCENES: A New Look At Screens, A 1000 Year-Old Decorative Object

by Tamara Moscowitz

“Privacy opens the curious mind to see beyond what is obvious,” said a wise craftsman at the mention of screens, the ultimate mysterious object that creates shadows, shields secrets, and diffuses light, qualities that go beyond function. Originating in China centuries ago, screens continue to evolve as innovative materials breath new life into this highly decorative object. For imaginative, out of the box thinkers, converting one object’s function into another as quickly as a blink of the eye can create that one-of-a-kind stunner.

Nothing is as it appears to be. Miya Shoji, founded in 1951, is run by a father and son team who carry the Japanese trait of politeness and indirectness as in describing the making of Shoji – “it begins from the beginning which is the end and the beginning.” Or, made from wood collected in the Northeast, traditional Japanese carpentry is used with handcrafted joinery. Tree fibers known as Kozo account for the delicate design on the laminated, translucent rice paper. Specialists in making double-sided Shoji, other beautifully custom-made objects can be found in the Chelsea shop.
